Warning: The University of Utah and the Systems and Technology office take no responsibility for damages, data loss or performance issues from enabling encryption. If you choose to enable encryption yourself, back up your laptop files before proceeding. If you do not feel comfortable following these steps consider taking your laptop to a third party tech support for help.
Mandatory Encryption Requirement:
The University of Utah Health Sciences has adopted a policy of using only encrypted devices for students, staff and faculty. We would like to thank you in advance for your help in meeting our required compliance with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services protections for patient information. We recognize the inconvenience, but this has been sanctioned by the U.S. Department of Health for all Health Sciences and is a mandatory requirement. The scope of this policy currently includes laptops.
Laptop is Not Encrypted? Start Here:
If your laptop is not Whole Disk (BitLocker or Filevault) encrypted, there are a couple of options available to you. Unfortunately, SYSTECH cannot help students encrypt their personal laptops. Please refer to the red text at the top of the page. We have linked below steps for you to encrypt the laptop yourself. If you do not feel comfortable doing this, you can seek help from a third party such as the Campus Book Store and other similar retailers (Best Buy, Office Max, etc.). They offer this service for a reasonable fee.
